British Motor Museums
Part of the Science Museum Group of Britain the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry offers a fascinating insight into the City's Industial past. In the Air and Space Hall visitors will find some superb examples of the City's Crossley cars. Crossley started as an engine manufacturer in the early 1900's and entered car production, then military vehicles and eventually buses and trucks.
Crossley cars were of high quality, as were wartime vehicles. Car production ended in 1938 and the company concentrated on trucks and buses. It was eventually taken over by AEC. There are some other vehicles on display in addition to Crossley.
Did you know that the Rolls-Royce motor company started life in Manchester, after a chance meeting between Charles Rolls and Henry Royce at the city’s Midland Hotel? The 1905 Rolls-Royce model on display was used by Henry Royce himself.
You can also see a 1912 Ford Model T, built in Trafford Park, Manchester, the home of Henry Ford’s first factory in Britain, and Europe’s first moving production line.
